B.C. ski resort that closed over lack of snow last year announces reopening

Mount Timothy Recreation Resort in Lac La Hache announced Wednesday it plans to reopen on Dec. 20.

Mount Timothy Recreation Resort in Lac La Hache announced it plans to reopen on Dec. 20.

In January, the owners put out a statement to say they were sad they couldn’t open because of “a lack of snow, continued warm temperatures, no precipitation in the forecast and what would be a very late start to the season.”

Wednesday’s statement was much brighter:

“This year’s already promising snow conditions and projections have the resort excited to welcome back families in search of a cost-effective and crowd-free winter getaway that serves as a refreshing alternative to other busier, high-priced destinations.”

Resorts throughout B.C. faced challenges last season. Metro Vancouver’s North Shore mountains — Grouse, Seymour and Cypress — all had delayed openings because of a warmer than normal start to winter largely due to the strong El Niño phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean. They also had days where they had to close.

But this year is already off to a much better start.

It was the resort’s earliest opening in more than eight years.
