Health care systems in B.C. and Alberta are mired in doctor shortages, lengthy surgical lists and emergency room closures. Both provinces also face difficult challenges recruiting enough nurses and other skilled professionals.
So, how should we tackle this health crisis in western Canada and across the country? Are there innovations that work elsewhere that could be brought here?
Join us for Health Care Delivery in B.C. and Alberta, the next in our series of Conversations Live events, starting tonight at 6 p.m. You can watch it live here and submit questions and comments about your own experiences with the health care system below:
The panelists include:
• Sue Paish is CEO of DIGITAL, one of five innovation superclusters funded by the federal government to advance tech projects in healthcare and other sectors. Paish was previously CEO of LifeLabs and Pharmacare.
• Suzanne Gill is president and CEO of Genome B.C., a non-profit organization supported by the provincial and federal governments that is involved in genomic research and innovation in healthcare and addressing environmental challenges.
• Valerie Lukac is a healthcare consultant with KPMG who has worked in North America and Europe over more than two decades on ways to improve care delivery.
• Dr. Anna Kindy is a physician and addiction specialist who was elected Conservative MLA in the riding of North Island in the recent B.C. election. Kindy also practiced medicine in rural Quebec.
• Dr. Brian Day founded the Cambie Care Centre and is a strong advocate for a hybrid system of public and private healthcare. He lost a constitutional court challenge arguing that patients should be allowed to use private health services when wait times in the public system are too long.
• Mary Ackenhusen is the former president and CEO of Vancouver Coastal Health, a regional health authority that serves 1.25 million people. Ackenhusen also worked for the Fraser health authority and provincial health ministry.
