The suspect charged with killing a health insurance executive had a brief on-camera outburst ahead of a hearing Tuesday.
Luigi Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on Monday in connection with the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan. The 26-year-old appeared at the Blair County courthouse for a hearing on his extradition to New York, where he faces charges of murder and other gun crimes.
Footage from local ABC affiliate WNEP and Reuters shows Mangione stepping out of a police car in front of the courthouse, handcuffed and wearing the orange inmate uniform also seen in his new mug shot. The car is surrounded by officers and press.
As deputies lead him into the building, Mangione turns toward the press and shouts, “It is completely out of touch and an insult to the intelligence of the American people and their lived experience.” It’s not immediately clear what specifically “it” is referring to.

Mangione physically struggles with several officers as they wrangle him into the courthouse, slamming him into a wall and into an open door.
Inside the courthouse, Mangione “mostly stared straight ahead at the hearing, occasionally consulting papers, rocking in his chair or looking back at the gallery,” according to The Associated Press. The suspect then reportedly tried to verbally respond to the court discussion “but was quieted by his lawyer.” No cameras were allowed in court.
The court found that Mangione will be held without bail until another extradition hearing. He has 14 days to challenge the bail revocation.
