Stephen Colbert turned Donald Trump’s candid comment about the possible impact of his return to the White House on the wallets of Americans into a funny but sharply-pointed punchline on Monday’s episode of “The Late Show.”
NBC’s Kristen Welker asked Trump in an interview that aired this weekend if he could promise Americans won’t face price hikes under his planned introduction of tariffs on imported goods. The president-elect replied, “I can’t guarantee anything, I can’t guarantee tomorrow.”
It’s “not exactly what you want to hear from the guy who’s about to have the nuclear codes,” suggested Colbert.
“It’s like your heart surgeon saying, ‘Before I put you under, you should know, I can’t guarantee tomorrow. I mean it’s pretty tense in there and it’s hard to fight the urge to squeeze your ticker like a stress ball. It makes a funny noise,’” he added.
