Eight-year-old boy killed, man injured in collision with snowplow truck near Castlegar

The crash occurred Saturday morning on Highway 3 just outside Castlegar

An eight-year-old boy from Nelson has been killed and a man injured after a highway collision between a snowplow dump truck and an SUV on the weekend.

Police are seeking witnesses and dash camera footage of the crash, which occurred just after 8 a.m. Saturday on Highway 3 just outside Castlegar.

“We are looking for dash camera video or people who may have seen the green Kia or the yellow snowplow dump truck in the moments leading up to the crash,” Cpl. Michael McLaughlin of the RCMP’s highway patrol said in a statement.

Road conditions that morning were icy with freezing rain, said police.

The eight-year-old was in the green Kia SUV with his five-year-old brother and their 44-year-old stepfather, who was behind the wheel. The brother and stepfather had minor injuries.

The 65-year-old driver of the snowplow dump truck, a Castlegar resident, was not injured.

Another person, a 57-year-old Castlegar man, suffered life-altering injuries after he was hit by the Kia as it spun away from the dump truck. The man had stopped to help another vehicle that was stuck in a ditch.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the highway patrol in Nelson at 250-354-5180.
