British shoppers have been hit with more price rises ahead of Christmas, this time with a favourite festive treat.
The cost of supermarket mince pies has soared by up to 40%, latest research shows.
The Grocer has compared the prices of 40 mince pie packs across supermarkets and discounters and found 26 had soared in price compared to last Christmas, while 12 remained the same, wo are cheaper this year than last.
Tesco’s Finest All Butter Pastry Mini Mince Pies rose from £2.50 to £3 as did Iceland’s Luxury 6 Butter Mince Pies.
Aldi’s Holly Lane 6 Deep Filled Mince Pies and 6 Iced Mince Pies, were both up 15 per cent, from £1.09 to £1.25. Asda’s The Bakery 6 Mince Pies also rose 15 per cent from £1.09 to £1.25.
Waitrose’s 6 All Butter Mince Pies has risen 10 per cent from £2.50 to £2.75, while Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference 4 Frangipane Mince Pies and 9 Mini Mince Pies are both up 9%, from £2.75 to £3.The Grocer said the rising costs of ingredients such as sultanas and butter had pushed up prices.
Heavy rains in Turkish sultana growing regions in May and June 2023 had sent the price of the key mince pie ingredient from $1,615 per tonne in May 3, 2023 to $2,600 per tonne by November.
The soaring cost of a Christmas dinner
The spiralling cost of mince pies is not the only increase shoppers will be facing this year. The price of Christmas Dinner in 2024 will rise by an inflation-busting 3.44 per cent meaning it will cost £49.33 each for roughly six people.
The rate outpacing the rate of food inflation according to NetVoucherCodes.
Aldi is the cheapest supermarket to shop with a cost of just £32.04, followed by Lidl at a price of £34.90 and ASDA costing £37.25.
Carrots, parsnips and potatoes have increased in price the most, as high as 26 per cent since last year, while cranberry sauce, stuffing mix and bucks fizz have decreased the most, with the former dropping by 27 per cent since last year.
