Weeds can be a big problem if they are growing in patio slabs in winter as they hold a lot of moisture which can make the surface even more slippery and hazardous.
If you do not act fast enough, will not only make an area unsafe but also encourage the growth of which can quickly take over your or .
One popular method to remove weeds is to use white vinegar, but Simon Akeroyd, a author, has shared that vinegar is not effective on weeds as it cannot penetrate deep enough to kill the root.
In a , Simon said: “Many of the vinegars and other liquids suggested by many gardeners on social media do not get to the root of the problem. Literally. They might destroy the leaves, but usually the root below survives and sends up new shoots.”
Instead, Simon explained that the best way to kill weeds is to ditch any kitchen ingredient or chemical products and use boiling hot water instead.

Simon said: “Boiling water usually kills off the entire weed. If it does manage to come back again, it will be much weaker, and a quick second or third dose with boiling water will finish it off.”
It may sound obvious, but weeds on patios, pathways, driveways, and any other stone surface in your garden can be difficult to get rid of, as their roots can penetrate deeply into any crack they find.
Not only does boiling water reach the weeds’ roots, but the high temperature causes the weed to go into thermal shock and damages the plant cells, killing it off quickly.
This is a simple, chemical-free method of removing weeds that is guaranteed to keep your property weed-free for a long time.

All you need to do is fill your kettle with water, boil it, and then carry it outside to where the weeds are being a nuisance.

Simon said: “Do be careful with pouring boiling water. Hold the kettle close to the plant to avoid it splashing you.”
Then, slowly pour the boiling water on the weeds. Make sure to pour as close as possible to the weed to target it directly and ensure it reaches as much of the roots as possible.
The weeds should begin to brown and wilt away within a few hours and should be completely dead in 24 hours.
However, some weeds with deep roots may need more than one application of water, so keep pouring the boiling water on any tough weeds daily until they completely die off.
Your patio space will be completely clear in no time so you can spend the rest of winter warm indoors without worrying about moss or weeds taking over your garden.
