More than five million vehicles could be running on UK roads with “dangerous defects” in a

Experts at the warned that motorists evading their annual were “putting everyone at risk”. 

The yearly check conducted by mechanics assesses whether a particular vehicle is safe to travel on the roads. 

Not passing a test will see a car effectively banned until to a minimum standard. 

However, many with some individuals likely to have major problems with their cars.

“Unchecked vehicles can have dangerous defects, putting everyone on the road at risk.”

Earlier this year, Select Car Leasing revealed more than five million road users were skipping the test.

Data gained via a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to the DVSA found there may be as many as 5.2 million vehicles on the road with a valid MOT certificate in place.

Around a third of the 5.2 million cars were retested for an MOT a month after expiring.

However, a further analysis of the information found that 3.4 million were only checked within three months after expiring.

Graham Conway, Managing Director of said: “MOTs are essential for ensuring that cars on the road are safe and roadworthy. Common reasons for failing an MOT include issues with lights and signals, suspension and brakes. 

“Not presenting a vehicle for an MOT on time might mean that crucial safety concerns are overlooked.” 

According to , motorists can be penalised for driving a vehicle considered to be in a “dangerous” condition. 

This can result in a staggering £2,500 fine, three penalty points on a driving licence and even a ban in some circumstances.

The RAC also admitted motorists could face serious problems for getting behind the wheel of a car if an MOT certificate has expired. 

They commented: “If you have missed your test and your certificate has expired, you can be prosecuted for driving without an MOT.

“The MOT and service are two very different things and it’s important to have both carried out to keep your car road legal and in peak condition.”
