ITV The Chase’s Mark Labbett hits back as fans rage over player’s ‘shameful’ move

star issued a powerful statement as fans unleashed their fury at one contestant.

The latest instalment (December 9) of the programme saw four players take on The Beast in the hopes of winning some cash.

Rob was the first person to take on Mark and managed to answer five questions correctly in the cash builder. Despite being tempted with a high offer of £35,000, the 28-year-old stuck with his £5,000.

He got the team off to the perfect start, making it through to the final chase without answering a question wrong. Hoping to follow in Rob’s footsteps was Charlie, however, things didn’t quite go to plan.

The 32-year-old answered just one question correctly in the cash builder, meaning she took just £1,000 to the table. Before revealing his offers, Mark urged Charlie to think about what her presence would be worth in the final chase over anything else.

He said: “It’s not what you know. It’s what you know that Rob doesn’t, or Evelyn doesn’t or Tony doesn’t.

“How much is it worth you being physically present in the final where you can chip in with the odd plus one, or the killer pushback on children’s TV that none of the rest of us know but you’ve just watched with your small children?”

Mark added: “Think about what’s the value of you being in the final chase.”

The Beast then gave Charlie a low offer of just £1 and a high offer of £20,000. The team agreed it would make more sense for Charlie to take the £1 and she did.

Presenter backed Charlie’s decision, claiming she would be “mad” if she didn’t take it.

“I know that there will be people at home going, ‘I’d never take the low offer’, but you’ve got to look at what’s the value to the team because it’s not your money, it’s the team’s money,” Mark exclaimed.

Despite Mark’s words of wisdom, viewers were outraged at Charlie’s decision as they flocked to social media to complain.

“£1? She should be ashamed of herself taking that. There is a lot of difference between £1000 and £1,” fumed one viewer.

Another wrote: “£1 taken! Absolutely ridiculous! Time to turn over to One,” as a third posted: “I’d be more embarrassed taking £1 than I would a minus.”

A fourth viewer added: “She’s gone for the £1?! What’s the point? If she’s not confident enough to go for the £1000 then surely she is no use to the team in the final chase anyway!”

Echoing this, another said: “£1 ….. Why do they let these people on the show?”

Charlie made it through to the final chase alongside Rob and final contestant Tony, with Evelyn failing to make it past the head-to-head.

With Tony’s addition of £8,000, the trio were playing for £13,001. The three contestants managed to get the better of Mark in the final chase and walked away with just over £4,333 each.
