12-year-old boy dead, girl injured after falling through ice at New York park

A 12-year-old boy is dead, and an 11-year-old girl has been critically injured after falling through ice at a park Saturday, Dec. 7 in Albany, New York.

Albany police were called to Washington Square Park around 4:35 p.m. after reports that multiple juveniles had fallen through the ice near the park’s lake house.

Officials located the girl who was transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital, where she is in critical condition, police said.

The New York State Police underwater recovery team conducted a search and found the body of the boy several hours later.

Albany police believe the boy fell through the ice while he was attempting to walk toward the lake house. Police think the girl tried to help him, but also fell through the ice.

Police have not released the names of the two children because of their ages.

Both children were students at North Albany Middle School, according to the City School District of Albany.

“Our hearts go out to the families of these students at this incredibly difficult time,” Superintendent Joseph Hochreiter said in a statement. “This is a terrible tragedy and we are grieving as a school community.”
