star Ravneet Gill has shared her go-to recipe for the “perfect” crispy roast potatoes.

The 33-year-old says that preparing your spuds the day before you want to serve them not only saves time, but also improves the quality of taste.

Exclusively revealing her method, she shared: “I do it where I boil them the night before and then I let them cool and [then] I shake them a little bit.

“Then, the next day, when they’re completely cold, I get them into hot goose fat in a deep roasting tray in the oven and I roast them, and they’re perfect every time.”

It’s generally recommended to parboil potatoes for 10-15 minutes before roasting them.

Ravneet says cooking roasties this way “guarantees really good potatoes” that will have “very, very crispy edges and a fluffier inside”.

The Junior Bake Off judge particularly recommends her method to those brave enough to cook a Christmas dinner for loved ones.

She explained: “When you’re doing it on the day you’ve got so many other things to juggle, sometimes you can over boil your potatoes, you can spoil them, you can under boil them.

“I really think getting ahead relieves a bit of stress and helps make sure that everything else is nice,” she added.

In association with Smart Energy GB, the author will also be cooking her roast potatoes in an air fryer, instead of an oven for the first time.

“[Somebody] told me they will be using their air fryer this year to do their potatoes and I actually think I might try that as well,” she shared.

“I’m always an oven person, but I’ve been really wrapping my head around air fryers recently. It is more energy efficient to use an air fryer, so it’s a good thing to start doing.”

Swapping your oven for an air fryer is just one of the ways to save money and energy, particularly on special occasions such as Christmas.

New research shows that six in 10 (63%) people say they are conscious of the impact their increased energy use has on household bills.

More hours spent cooking (61%), heating the house (51%) and using appliances (46%) were some of the things found to contribute most to increased energy needs.

A separate poll by Smart Energy GB revealed that households that have a smart meter believe they have saved an average of £140 per year, due to monitoring the costs.

Ravneet adds: “It’s incredible that whatever cultural or religious occasion is celebrated, some themes ring true across many of them – spending time with loved ones, enjoying delicious food and drink and marking it with those yearly family traditions.

“I know first-hand about the rising energy demands that come with these festivities, but understanding simple swaps to be more energy efficient and having a smart meter has taken some of the pressure off.

“The greater level of visibility the in-home display gives me, means I can fully embrace the celebrations which is what it’s all about.”
