Renowned gardening expert  has unveiled his top advice for choosing and maintaining a real tree this holiday season.

His tips not only ensure a beautiful tree but also help avoid the dreaded piles of needles on the floor.

Titchmarsh advocates for living , particularly Blue Spruces, which he praises for their longevity, aesthetic appeal, and needle retention.

“Living Christmas trees are a big improvement on pre-cut spruces that quickly shed needles all over the living room floor,” he said.

“Blue spruces cost a tad more, but they look so beautiful they hardly need decorating.”

He recommended purchasing these trees already potted from garden centers.

Unlike pre-cut trees, living trees can be repotted after the festive season and used year after year, making them an eco-friendly and cost-effective option.

To keep a living tree in peak condition, there are a few thing Titchmarsh recommends.

  1. Keep it outdoors until decorations are required. This prevents premature drying.
  2. Avoid radiators and place the tree in a cool, light-filled room during the festive period.
  3. Water regularly to maintain moisture and health.
  4. Prune for perfection, snipping off dead or protruding branches to achieve the ideal shape.

After Christmas, the tree should be moved back outdoors.

In late March, it can be repotted, allowing it to thrive and be ready for next year’s festivities.

For those opting for pre-cut trees, Titchmarsh shared additional insights with .

He advised spraying the tree with an anti-desiccant before bringing it inside to lock in moisture and needles.

Sawing off the bottom inch of the trunk ensures better water absorption.

“Treat your Christmas tree like a large bunch of flowers,” he said, recommending a tree stand with a reservoir for daily water refills.
