A motoring expert has urged drivers in parts of the country to unless their journey is vital during the weekend.

The advice comes as the issues a red weather warning across the coast, as is due to bring 90mph gusts of wind to the west of the country.

Michael Foote, and founder of the insurance comparison service , highlighted that drivers who need to travel during the storm should stay particularly alert to avoid serious issues.

He explained: “Storm Darragh underscores the importance of staying alert and being prepared. It’s better to wait out the storm than to risk your safety or face .

“If insurers determine that a driver acted irresponsibly—such as travelling in unsafe conditions without necessity—their claim could be reduced or rejected entirely.”

In particular, Quote Goat warned that motorists who take risks on the road in stormy weather could have their car insurance policy cancelled.

Motorists who do get their insurance invalidated for driving in dangerous weather conditions also run the risk of being fined £300 and given six penalty points for travelling without insurance.

As a result, it is always important for motorists to check their car insurance policy to see if they have any restrictions on the conditions they can get behind the wheel in.

Michael suggested that motorists should avoid travelling altogether if their journey could wait until after the storm passes.

He added: “Storm Darragh is expected to bring conditions that could cause drivers to lose control, encounter fallen debris, or face reduced visibility.

“In many cases, staying off the road is the safest option.”

Drivers who do need to travel during Storm Darragh were advised by Quote Goat to be particularly vigilant in order to prevent accidents and damage to their vehicle.

In particular, motorists should travel at slower than normal speeds, keeping a distance of 20 seconds behind vehicles they are following in order to give themselves plenty of time to stop in an emergency.

When travelling, drivers should also check for any debris that could be lying in the middle of the road and refrain from travelling through standing water that could be deeper than they imagine.
