Getting behind the wheel for your first at 17 can be a daunting experience — after all, you’re suddenly in charge of a quick metal box that’s more than capable of causing a bad accident. Statistically, one in five new drivers will have an accident in their first six months, too, so it’s a good idea to get as much experience as possible before passing your test and venturing out solo.

That’s where comes in. It’s essentially a driving school for kids between the ages of 4 and 17 where they can learn how to control a car and how to follow the rules of the road in a dual-controlled vehicle with a qualified instructor.

Lessons are conducted on private property around the country, and fewer than one in 25 of their students experience an accident in their first six months post-pass. That extra experience ahead of taking lessons at 17 clearly goes a long way to producing safer drivers. Please note that kids cannot pass their driving tests via these lessons, however, and will need to wait until they’re 17 and in possession of a provisional licence to book a test.

Lessons start from £46.99, and this Christmas you can take advantage of a too: YDXMAS20. This is a fantastic outside-the-box present idea that’s sure to get any kid very excited to get started. This code expires on Christmas Day, so be sure to jump on it ahead of Santa’s visit.

During lessons kids will learn how to steer, brake, change gear, and perform manoeuvres, all whilst enjoying the thrill of driving a car ahead of the usual minimum age. For an extra luxury, kids can venture out in a Porsche 911 Carrera 4, a Mercedes-Benz SL 500, or a Bentley Continental Flying Spur, the latter of which has been specially-designed for children between the ages of 4 and 10.

Over at TrustPilot, Young Driver has got an excellent 4.7 out of 5 rating from almost 6,500 reviews. “Amazing experience for my son’s birthday present,” said one five-star TrustPilot review. “He turned 13, he’s autistic and cars are his passion. His instructor made him feel at ease, kept calm with a friendly approach and kept the lesson fun. We had an hour lesson and as soon as he got out the car he wanted to go again. Will definitely re-book.”

“The team at North Weald airfield were nothing short of fantastic,” said another. “This was my son’s sixth driving lesson but only the second at North weald, and both times they were fab. My son is autistic and car mad so when we arrived on Sunday and he saw a Porsche he was beside himself. Although we hadn’t booked the Porsche, Karen and the team jiggled things around so Jamie could drive it. Absolutely made his day. Many thanks to the team for making his day so good.”

Another said: “These lessons are a fantastic way of introducing young people to driving. My 10-year-old son loves all things to do with driving and loved his experience. The instructors are great too. Would highly recommend.”

Some feel the early lessons aren’t comprehensive enough. “Great iniative and good idea to get youngsters driving before they are 17,” said a three-star review. “But the session was not the greatest. Not the best use of the 30 minutes; they just had my daughter driving up and down course, no stop start or manouvering.

“Didn’t really teach driver much about clutch control — an essential for new drivers.” For a first go and in only thirty minutes, however, it’s fair to say there’s probably only time for the very basics during the first lesson.

Others have had issues with bookings being fulfilled properly: “We booked an hours lesson and the school put it down as 2 half hours so he 2 instructors on the day. The 2nd instructor was almost ten minutes late. However my son did enjoy the lessons, but each instructor teaches different so he got conflicting information.”

Initiatives for getting kids driving before 17 are rare, but if your child has crossed that threshold and sorted their provisional licence, is a great option starting from £33 per hour. also provides driving lessons.
