Indoor plants face challenges similar to those outside during winter
Adjust light exposure for indoor plants
In winter, sunlight is weaker, and the days are shorter, so it’s important to modify how much light your plants receive.
Position your plants closer to windows, especially south-facing ones, which offer the most sunlight, followed by east and west-facing windows. To promote even growth, rotate your plants regularly so all sides get equal exposure.
If natural light is lacking, supplement it with LED grow lights, which come with adjustable settings to match the specific needs of your plants.
Stylish grow bulbs that fit into existing lamps are also a great option for ensuring your plants get the light they need.
Reconsider your watering routine
In the colder months, your plants’ growth slows down, meaning they need less water. To prevent overwatering, which can lead to root rot, adjust your watering schedule.

Be sure to use room-temperature water to avoid shocking the plant with cold tap water. Overwatering is a common mistake in winter, as plants enter dormancy or a slower growth phase.
Ms Dent said to differentiate between overwatering and underwatering, note that underwatered plants will “perk up” after watering, while overwatered plants may rot from the roots and affect the leaves.
Look after the leaves
Dusting your plants’ leaves is especially important in winter, as it helps them absorb more light. Avoid repotting, as plants are less active during this time, and reduce the use of fertiliser since they don’t require as many nutrients.
If you notice issues like leaf drop or crispy, burnt edges, it could indicate problems with light, water, or temperature, so make adjustments to the plant’s environment as needed.
Maintain proper temperature and humidity levels
To keep your plants in top condition, ensure the temperature remains steady between 15°C and 24°C. Avoid placing plants near drafts, radiators, or heating vents, as extreme heat can cause damage.
Certain plants, like peace lilies, are particularly sensitive to dry, hot air, so keep them away from direct heat sources. Increasing humidity levels can also make a big difference for plants during winter.
You can do this by placing a water tray near your plants, regularly misting them, or using a humidifier to maintain a more plant-friendly atmosphere.
By following these expert tips, your houseplants will have a much better chance of staying healthy and vibrant throughout the winter months.
