BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty scolds Matt Lucas as fans slam ‘car crash’ interview

scolded Matt Lucas on Friday morning after the comedian appeared on the Breakfast sofa to promote his new book.

However, it seems Matt broke a show rule, and Naga was quick to pick him up on it. Naga started the segment by stating: “This is your latest book. Well, this is the paperback version of your first novel.”

“Why a children’s book?” the host asked, to which Matt replied: “Well, I thought if [David] Walliams can do it, anyone can.”

The Little Britain star held up his book before adding: “This book is a bit different. This is the Boy Who Slept Through Christmas.”

“You’re not allowed to do that,” Naga scolded as Matt asked: “Am I not allowed to do that?”

chipped in: “You come on here, and you’re breaking the rules already. David Walliams wouldn’t do that, you know? He knows the rules.”

“He would do that,” Matt stated before turning his attention back to his book: “This is a stage musical in novel form because not everyone can get to the theater, not everyone lives near the theater and the theater can be quite pricey.

“And I was writing this children’s book, The Boy Who Slept Through Christmas and I thought one day I’d love this to be a stage musical, and then I decided to turn the book into a musical.

“So there are 20 QR codes throughout the book, so people can hear the songs that I’ve written and recorded as they read. All the lyrics are at the back as well.”

Towards the end of the interview, Naga told Matt off again by telling him to “stop it” after he cheekily picked up his book again.

Fans also took to social media to express their opinions on the segment, with one labelling it a “car crash.”

One tweeted: “You’re not allowed to promote your book but please come on to promote your book… #BBCBreakfast.”

“#BBCBreakfast can we stop this nonsense now,” another pleaded while a third added: “Car crash interview #BBCBreakfast.”

Someone else said: “@BBCBreakfast How ridiculous. He’s not allowed to show the cover of his book. But he’s on your programme specifically to promote his book and talks for several minutes about it!!!!” (sic)

Others were thrilled to see Matt on their screens, with one writing: “Nice to see @RealMattLucas on @BBCBreakfast. Love the sound of the book, great Christmas gift for the kids 🙂 Shame to miss you at the PW Awards.”

Breakfast airs daily at 6am on One.
