President-elect Donald Trump announced his plans to nominate Peter Navarro to be his top trade adviser in the White House.
Navarro, 75, previously served as a top trade aide to Trump during his first term. In a post on his social media website, Truth Social, Trump praised Navarro’s “extensive Policy analytic and Media skills.”
Trump’s pick comes just five months after Navarro was released from prison following his 2023 conviction on contempt of Congress charges for his role in attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election. He was sentenced to four months in prison.
Navarro openly defied a subpoena to testify before a House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Navarro had orchestrated a scheme to block President Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory and send the election to the House of Representatives.

If he had succeeded, Trump likely would have won the White House since more state delegations were controlled by Republicans.
“Yes, indeed, this morning I did walk out of political prison,” Navarro said on stage at the Republican National Convention earlier this year. “Joe Biden and his department of injustice put me there.”
In his Truth Social post, Trump said Navarro was “treated horribly by the Deep State, or whatever else you would like to call it.”
