The Expensive Car Supplement has previously only applied to luxury petrol and diesel models in the highest price brackets.

This includes a section of middle-range family vehicles that will be hit with the costly rates in a major blow.

It means popular cars such as the Volkswagen ID.3 and Kia Nero EV will likely pay the Expensive Car Supplement rate.

Erin Baker, editorial director at said: “While the ECS hasn’t significantly affected petrol or diesel car sales, the landscape may change for electric vehicles.

“With two-thirds of EVs costing more than £40,000, the additional road tax could make them less appealing. However, leasing offers a practical solution. 

“The ECS is automatically incorporated into the monthly payments, making it simpler for drivers to manage the added costs.”

In another blow, the charge will still apply even if the first owner decides to sell the vehicle.

Many second-hand EV owners are also likely to face the extra fees in a staggering blow to the used car market. 

Ginny Buckley, founder of , warned the £40,000 threshold “doesn’t represent luxury in the EV market”. 

She added: “It penalises family drivers and business drivers who need a longer range. It’s a poorly thought out policy.”
