Post Office sends warning to millions ahead of frantic Christmas rush – six tips to follow

As the period fast approaches, millions of presents and cards will be bought and shipped around the country.

The has issued advice to its customers urging them to send their mail as early as possible in order to ensure gifts are received on time. 

The mail service has entered its busiest period as Post Offices up and down the UK prepare for long queues and a larger number of parcels.

For the more organised, gift sending has already commenced as the Post Office warns it expects its busiest posting date to be next Monday (December 9). 

Despite the most chaotic date set to be next week, a survey conducted by the organisation of 2,000 UK adults, more than a third of shoppers will leave their Christmas shopping to the last minute. The research also shows that one in five will complete their gift buying as late as 23 December.

Postmaster experience director Mark Eldridge said: “Postmasters across the country and at the heart of local communities are here to help. By planning ahead and avoiding peak times, you can focus on what matters most – enjoying the festive season.”

Here is the full list of tips from the Post Office:

1. Post early: Post parcels and cards early to ensure gifts arrive in time for Christmas. Peak posting day is 9th December and you can check last posting dates online.

2. Talk to your postmaster for advice on the best service for your needs: With a choice of delivery partners available over the counter, your Postmaster can help to explain which provider meets your needs.

3. Collect and return online shopping at your Post Office: You can collect your online shopping from your local Post Office branch as well as help with your online shopping returns too.

4. Use tracked and signed for services for extra security: You are able to keep track of where your parcel is – these are available with multiple carriers and some options can guarantee next day delivery.

5. Save time by completing customs forms online: If you send items abroad, you must fill in a customs form. To avoid delays when coming into a branch use the online custom forms tool to receive a barcode to your phone. Show this to the Postmaster and they can then print the completed customs form in the branch for you.

6. Check what you can send and pack items securely at home: Save time at the counter by checking what you can send in advance through the Post Office’s website, and packing your parcel at home.
