The New York Police Department has released photos of the man suspected of killing the CEO of UnitedHealthcare.
Brian Thompson, 50, was shot multiple times from several feet away outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan shortly before 7 a.m. on Wednesday, the department confirmed. Officers are still searching for the gunman, who ran from the scene and was last spotted in Central Park on an e-bike.
Police have yet to announce a suspected motive, but the department believes it was a “premeditated, pre-planned, targeted attack.”
“This does not appear to be a random act of violence,” Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said at a press conference late Wednesday morning.
One of the images released by the NYPD is a still taken from surveillance video of the shooting itself. Another image appears to show the same person on a bicycle.
In the first image, the shooter is seen pointing a gun at Thompson off-screen. Officers told the news briefing that the suspect fired repeatedly, interrupted by a brief gun jam, and shot Thompson in the back.
“From watching the video, it does seem that he’s proficient in the use of firearms as he was able to clear the malfunctions pretty quickly,” Kenny said.
Reports had suggested that the attacker used a suppressor, also known as a silencer, but Kenny said video alone was not enough “to make a determination on whether or not a silencer was used.”
The suspect is described as a white male dressed in black clothing and wearing a face mask and a gray backpack.
Police are offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
Thompson had served as CEO of UnitedHealthcare for more than three years and first joined the company in 2004. He lived in Minnesota.
UnitedHealthcare, one of the nation’s largest health insurers, was holding its investor conference at the hotel.
Thompson’s wife told NBC News shortly after his fatal shooting that he’d been receiving threats.
