The tiny UK city named ‘worst in UK’ is getting an incredible £3.9m facelift

A UK that was named one of the worst in the country will now benefit from an incredible new £3.9 million regeneration scheme.

Preston in Lancashire, north England, was named the worst “new town” by due to previous failed attempts to “regenerate, populate and link [it] up”.

The Mark 3 scheme faced fierce opposition from locals, and , but now the city has been given a new opportunity to revitalise itself.

Preston Council is aiming to give Moor Park, the city’s largest and oldest park, a £3.9 million makeover using money from the ‘ Levelling Up fund.

Part of this will involve adding new fountains, creating new wildflower meadows, new fencing, and making other refurbishments.

The Serpentine Lake will also benefit from as it’s due to be drained and enlarged.

The lake will be extended southwards into an area currently occupied by trees and other vegetation.

After it’s drained, the silt will be removed before it’s expanded and surrounded by wetland plants and wildflowers.

A 26-metre bridge that used to run over it will also be rebuilt, replicating the route of the previous one and made of a steel lattice framework and timber deck boards.

A new path will also be running from the existing one near the lake to the new bridge.
