Roger Federer sent Juan Martin del Potro an emotional video message
Juan Martin del Potro enjoyed an emotional send-off in Argentina on Sunday night as he faced in ‘The Last Challenge’.
The former world No. 3 retired in early 2022 but he wanted the chance to enjoy a happy parting memory on a tennis court and played an exhibition in the Parque Roca stadium.
As he officially waved goodbye to the sport, sent his old rival a heartfelt video message as he admitted it was time to “move on”.
Del Potro endured a heartbreaking farewell at the 2022 Argentina Open. The two-time Olympic medallist hadn’t played a match since injuring his knee in 2019 and sobbed as he suffered a first-round defeat.
The 36-year-old had not been seen on a tennis court since. But he gave himself the chance to bow out on his own terms on Sunday night as he beat Djokovic in an exhibition match in front of a packed crowd in Buenos Aires.
It was an emotional night, as the 2009 US Open champion enjoyed a standing ovation. The Argentine was also honoured with video messages, and Federer shared an earnest tribute to his former foe.
Appearing on the screen, the Swiss star said: “It’s Roger here. I hope you’re doing well. Listen, I know that this is a special moment for you.

“You were a special player and a special person for the tennis world and I hope that the moment right now is one that you’re celebrating. It shouldn’t be sad, I hope it’s not like that.”
While Del Potro has cruelly been forced to end his career early and is still suffering with his knee injury, Federer told him there were great things ahead. “We all need to move on in life and I think the best is yet to come for you, Juan Martin,” he added.
“I hope that the people in Argentina are celebrating you right now and that, with Novak, you’re having a special moment. I wish I could be there of course in person but just know I’m thinking of you.
“I wish you all the very best, it’s been an absolute honour and a special treat for me to play against you on the court and just spend the time together. So I wish you all the very best, I hope I see you in the future, I’m sure very soon, and enjoy the moment.”
Del Potro also had the chance to address his fans and loved ones, thanking them for their support. “From the bottom of my heart, I thank everyone who came and accompanied me throughout my career,” the former No. 3 said.
“The affection from the people has filled my soul all these years. I thank everyone who supported me until this last challenge and express my gratitude to the athletes and sportspeople, now former colleagues, who left their messages on this special day.”
And the 36-year-old got his wish – he managed to leave tennis with a happy memory.
“Finally, a special mention to my family and my loved ones who have been with me since I was very young until today. And I promise you I conclude my career and I leave happy,” he concluded.
