A top motoring expert has revealed that one simple thing

Keeping up with regular car maintenance such as servicing the engine, checking filters and may seem like a lot of work over the Christmas period.

However, Drew Hickman, a motoring expert at , stressed that keeping a car in tip-top shape this winter will keep components running smoothly and and bills down.

The latest warning comes after new research from revealed that fuel economy in the average petrol car

Meanwhile, fuel consumption can rise by around 24% for shorter three to five-mile trips over the winter.

Drew said: “Regularly servicing your engine, tyres, and filters is key to maintaining fuel efficiency during the winter months.

“An engine that’s in peak condition burns fuel more efficiently, and well-maintained tyres with good tread provide better grip, reducing resistance.

“Tyre maintenance is especially important, as winter road conditions can increase wear. Checking tread depth and tyre condition can improve grip on icy roads, keeping you safe and fuel-efficient.”

Experts have admitted that regular acceleration and braking in winter conditions can increase fuel use.

This is likely to impact vehicles in stop-and-go traffic in busy areas such as shopping centres ahead of the Christmas holidays.

Cold weather can also have an impact on tyre traction which can increase rolling resistance.

It means engines have to work a lot harder to keep a vehicle moving which in turn uses up more petrol or diesel.

Drew added: “Engines require more fuel to reach normal operating temperature in cold weather, as the difference in ambient and operating temperatures is greater in winter. This means it takes longer for engines to warm up.”

previously admitted regular maintenance and servicing were crucial to improve economy rates.

They added: “It’s particularly important to make sure your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure as indicated in your owner’s manual as underinflated and overinflated tyres both adversely affect fuel economy.”
