During a Q&A session for his new reality show Meet The Rees-Moggs, revealed that nothing is too “intrusive” when it comes to sharing his home, family life and wealth with the public.
However, as the former Tory MP declared decisively, there are still boundaries: “We weren’t going to be filmed in the state of undress – [a rule] which was only broken once.” The dad-of-six had been playing cricket with son Alfred with his coat off, allowing viewers of one of the show’s episodes to see him wearing his braces.
“It’s very bad manners, to allow your braces to be filmed,” he blushed, referring to the suspenders secured around the shoulders to keep a pair of trousers up. The fancier alternative to a belt, they are seen by many as old-fashioned but are still worn by some – and especially in wealthy, sartorially conscious circles.
Jacob stuttered: “I do apologise to the viewing public for that”, but his wife Helena – daughter of a fellow politician and heiress to an estimated £45 million pound fortune – quipped: “At least you made sure your trousers didn’t fall down!”
“Yes, that would have been far worse!” he shot back. “We weren’t going to be filmed when we weren’t respectable.”

He’d already clarified that Meet The Rees-Moggs will be “a totally different kettle of fish to ” – although he also admitted that he hasn’t seen a single episode.
While Jacob and Helena will be showing their “domestic life”, even featuring their housekeeper ironing and changing bed-sheets in guest rooms, it’s miles apart from their “private life”.
In a bid to keep the two separate, they insisted they wouldn’t be filmed in the bathroom or bedroom and that there’d be no lingerie or nightwear on-screen.
However, Q&A host Matt Forde wasn’t giving up on the idea, mischievously telling them: “If there’s a public appetite maybe for series two, don’t rule it out!”

However, as he quizzed them again about whether they’d be “naked” in the next series, Jacob insisted: “I think, as Margaret Thatcher once said, ‘No, no, no, no!'”
Helena was equally adamant, chiming in: “As I believe the Princess Royal once said to Cherie Blair, ‘Let’s not go there, Mrs Blair!'”
Instead, Meet The Rees-Moggs was intended to be “deeply political” and to give viewers an insight into Jacob’s duties as MP for North East Somerset, although he admitted his plans were derailed when he was “unelected” in favour of Labour.
He’s happy to “fill the gap” with footage of his children and interactions with his wife though, explaining: “I never thought it was too intrusive. I think if you are in public life, you live a public life.
“I don’t believe in privacy laws. I don’t think that you can take the benefits of public life without taking the drawbacks to it enough.”
The first episode of Meet The Rees-Moggs will be available to stream from December 2 on Discovery+.
