A pretty dune backed, is set to receive a £350,000 makeover.
Located at the mouth of the River Nevern, Newport Sands Beach in is known locally as ‘Traeth Mawr’ which means “Big Beach” and for good reason – it is around 1.5 miles long.
The beach attracts flocks of visitors every year thanks to its glorious and is only a short drive or 25-30 minute walk from the centre of Newport, Pembrokeshire.
Guests staying in the village can choose from an array of hotels, B&Bs, guesthouses, caravan and camping sites. A golf course even backs onto the beach perfect for those with a keen interest.
Now plans by Pembrokeshire national park scheme to redevelop Newport Sands’ car park, with extra parking spaces, beach access ramps and new public conveniences, is expected to be approved in just a week’s time.

In the application, land owner of the national park sought permission for the demolition and replacement of the existing public convenience block, the creation of an access ramp and steps to south slipway, the erection of a beach wheelchair storage building, and works to the existing car park, including new pay and display machines, at Newport Sands PCNP Car Park, Golf Course Road.
The works include an extra 52 car parking spaces over the 43 currently there, along with an increase in disabled parking spaces.
Last year, the tide turned on a beach parking tradition at Newport Sands after Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority put an end to beach parking due to safety concerns, limiting vehicular access to the beach to emergency services and those requiring essential access.

A petition was later launched demanding a U-turn, claiming an outright ban will have an adverse effect on a wide cross-section of beach users, including disabled visitors.
A report for committee members ahead of the December 4 meeting says: “The proposal will result in improved and enhanced services for visitors to the Newport Sands car park by providing better beach access, clearly laid out parking bays and pedestrian zones, improved public convenience facilities, and landscaping enhancements across the site.
“The provision of a changing places facility, beach wheelchair storage and new access ramp are likely to assist in enhancing access for wheelchair users to this site.
“Overall, officers consider that the proposals are acceptable and that the scheme as a whole protects the special qualities of the National Park whilst delivering appropriate enhancements to this important community facility.”
