Snooker star Ashley Hugill achieved an incredible feat last week when he made back-to-back 147s during a practice session. The 30-year-old, who was crowned world amateur champion in 2020, has been lauded for his efforts after a video was shared on social media.

Hugill first appeared on the snooker Tour in 2017 after coming through a Q School to earn a two-year card.

He featured at his only and reached the quarter-finals of the English Open later that year, before losing to Mark Allen.

Hugill was on the practice table at Victoria’s Snooker Academy in Sheffield last Friday and managed to pot a few reds and blacks. He soon sensed his opportunity to hit a maximum break and went on to achieve the feat in less than 14 minutes.

Hugill set the balls up for a second frame following his endeavours as his practice partner hit a break-off shot. And, incredibly, the snooker star was able to hit a second maximum in under 18 minutes.

The feat was captured by CCTV, with the venue along with the caption. “Our academy has been open nearly nine years, last week one of the most amazing things happened as @AcHugill made back-to-back 147s in match practice! We captured it all and posted on YouTube for your viewing pleasure!”

The World Snooker Tour also shared the video, with Hugill commenting: “What an unbelievable feeling this was!”

Hugill has gone head-to-head with some of the best snooker players in the world, defeating the likes of Kyren Wilson, Jack Lisowski and Ali Carter ahead of his appearance at the Crucible two-and-a-half years ago.

He was even extolled by Ronnie O’Sullivan after losing to The Rocket at the 2022 European Masters and later admitted he was “trying to learn” from the seven-time world champion.

“A big shout out to Ashley Hugill,” said O’Sullivan. “He’s 27, so not very young in snooker terms, but a very good player and still not very experienced in Tour terms.

“He has a lot of good qualities, and I’m not one for giving out compliments unless they are deserved. The same as Wu Yize earlier in the week, he will be a world champion if he develops and gets good advice.

“There is a right way and a wrong way to play a sport, and they both play snooker the right way. You might win, but if you do it in the wrong way you ain’t getting my eyeballs. It’s the way you do it, sometimes. You have good players, great players and exceptional players.”

Hugill then responded: “That was a massive confidence boost actually. I’ve watched that interview a few times and my family love watching it.

“He’s been good to me actually, Ronnie. We went for a run together, I’m quite into running, so we did that and I’ve been trying to learn from him.”
