Friendly exes Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner help feed the homeless on Thanksgiving

‘Their kindness, warmth, and dedication brought so much joy to our Skid Row community’

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner had a friendly reunion this week to help feed the homeless at a charity event in downtown Los Angeles.

Pictured on social media wearing hairnets and aprons that read “I heart The Midnight Mission,” Affleck and Garner, who were married from 2005 to 2018, dished out food and supplies to some of the city’s most vulnerable citizens.

“Today, we were honoured to have Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner join us at The Midnight Mission for Thanksgiving! Their kindness, warmth, and dedication brought so much joy to our Skid Row community,” they captioned their post. “Thank you, Ben and Jennifer, for serving meals and sharing smiles on this special day. Your compassion reminds us all of the true meaning of Thanksgiving—coming together to support one another.”

I don’t know that it helps them or not, but I know it’s helpful to me,” Affleck told the publication.

“It’s easy to sort of throw up your hands and say there’s nothing you can do,” Affleck added. “But the truth is there are people who want to make their lives better, who are struggling, who need help and who you can benefit by even doing a little bit, giving a little bit of money or a little bit of time. It’s just a really powerful thing to do to be able to connect with people.”

In a message she shared with 250 million Instagram followers early Friday, Lopez, 55, was also clearly fine being on her own.

“I hope everybody had a beautiful and Happy Thanksgiving. I am so incredibly grateful for all of you. 🧡,” she captioned an image in which she posed behind a giant roast turkey.

Earlier this month, a source told PEOPLE that Lopez is still trying to maintain a relationship with Affleck’s children as their divorce moves ahead.

“Jennifer keeps in touch with the Affleck kids. Her whole family loves them. She wants them to know that they can always reach out if they need anything at all.”

But it’s still a disappointing end to a year, which she kicked off with The Greatest Love Story Never Told, a documentary she made about her and Affleck’s romantic reunion nearly 20 years after they were first engaged.

In the documentary, Affleck asked her if she’d been able to move past what went wrong in 2003.

“I think I was angry at you for a long time,” she replied. “But that heartbreak set both of us on a course to figuring ourselves out to being better people. I think I’ve forgiven you all the way. I think I need to forgive myself some things.”
