Wrong turn at the Canadian border leads to felony charge for U.S. man

The 62-year-old was following his GPS when he was ‘inadvertently’ directed to the Canadian border

An American man has been arrested for unlawful gun possession after accidentally taking a wrong turn into Canada this week, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The 62-year-old was driving a truck with a commercial shipment on Nov 24. He was following his GPS, trying to travel to Michigan, when he was “inadvertently” directed to the Canadian border. The man, who is from Louisiana, didn’t have the proper paperwork to enter the country, so he was turned away by Canadian officials.

“It was determined that the driver…unlawfully possessed the firearm due to prior felony convictions prohibiting possession of firearms,” per the border agency.

The man was taken into custody and processed by border officers. The man and the firearm were turned over to New York State Police.

The man now faces a felony charge for criminal possession of a weapon.

Canada Border Services Agency did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
