UK weather maps turn purple as giant 506-mile snow bomb hits Britain – full list of areas

New maps have turned purple as a giant 506-mile is set to hit .

Predictions from show a stretching from the Midlands to Wick at the top of Scotland.

The Cairngorms in Scotland, not surprisingly, is set to be the most affected region.

The north west of Scotland, such as Oban and Argyll and Bute, looks set to be doused in the white stuff, and snow could strike as far south as Dumfries and Galloway, in the south of Scotland, and Carlisle just over the border.

Snow is expected to also hit Aberdeen and large parts of the Republic of Ireland.

The depth of snowfall to be expected ranges between 0.2 and around 3cm.

Only 1cm of snowfall is expected in Greater Manchester, and while 3cm could fall in Newcastle. The darker the colour on the map, the deeper it is expected.

But the weather is unlikely to cause any significant disruption any further south.

The Midlands and the east of England are set to escape the snow, with the south also not expected to experience waves of the white stuff.

Temperatures are set to dip below 0°C in some parts of the country.

According to maps, these will be the north of England and in sections of the Scottish borders.

In the middle of Scotland, inlcuding in Aberdeen and Inverness, people have been told to prepare for below freezing temperatures.

As regards wind chill, areas of Scotland above Edinburgh are predicted to be battered by gales of as low as -10°C.

The north of England will also be affected, with winds below 0°C, according to predictions.

They will be relatively wramer, although still cold, in the south of England.

In addition, it will be ‘fairly windy’ at first in the east, experts predict.

The is also predicting a chance of snow from December 12.

A spokesperson said: “Settled weather is signalled to be most likely at first, at least across the south. However, towards mid-December, there are signs that the weather will become less settled again, with west or northwesterly types preferred.

“These will bring some wetter and windier spells with a risk of some snow, especially across northern hills. These conditions may prevail into late December, although drier, more settled spells may also affect the UK at times, again these probably more likely towards the south.

“Temperatures generally close to average through the period, or slightly above in areas which are wet and windy.”

The outlook for the next five days across the UK, the says is ‘generally cloudier’ but ‘milder’ at the weekend.

There may also be ‘rain at times’.

Today:

The frost and fog will gradually lift from most areas, leading to a dry day with some bright and sunny spells. However, it will remain chilly in areas where the fog lingers.

The west will see increasing cloud cover and wind, with some sporadic rain developing.

Tonight:

The east will experience clear spells with further frost and fog expected. It will be cloudier and windier in the far west and northwest, with coastal gales and some patchy rain and drizzle.

Friday:

Cloud and rain will persist in the west and north, potentially heavy at times, and slowly spreading eastwards. The southeast will stay dry with some hazy sunshine.

Conditions will become milder.

From Monday until Wednesday, December 11, low pressure will ‘continue to bring rain and showers for many’, and it will wintry across northern Scotland.
