Sarah Ferguson says her cancer treatment ‘cut the rubbish out of her mind’

Sarah Ferguson says undergoing treatment for cancer helped her “cut the rubbish out of her mind”.

The revealed she was diagnosed with a malignant melanoma, a form of skin , in January. It was discovered while the 65-year-old was being treated for breast cancer.

At the time, Sarah said she was “taking some time to myself”. She has now spoken about feeling a sense of clarity and no longer struggling with self-doubt after undergoing the cancer treatment.

Speaking to Women’s Weekly, she said: “I think it cut away the rubbish of my mind. Thinking I was too fat or never good enough.

“It clarifies things. It just sort of takes away the self-sabotage and self-doubt.

“And you think to yourself, why did you waste so much time worrying about things that aren’t true? That’s what changed.”

Sarah has decided to channel her energy into her charity work after her recovery. She has recently been speaking about childhood cancer at the Children’s Medical Research Institute in Sydney, .

She says she enjoys learning about the scientific advances in cancer treatment so she can share them with her audience. And while she says some people have questioned her need to talk about her health, she believes it is important.

The duchess was the third royal this year to announce she was diagnosed with cancer. King Charles and the Princess of Wales have also faced their own health struggles.

The duchess however hopes her decision to speak out will encourage more people to “go through the fear factor” and get screened for cancer. She hopes this will help them catch the cancer early enough to be treated.

Both and have subsequently returned to royal duties. Kate, who announced she is cancer free in September, is continuing her gradual return to public life and has planned a small number of public engagements in the coming months.

She plans to attend a joint appearance with next week to welcome Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Hamad bin Suhaim Al Thani on a state visit to the UK. She will however only attend the daytime duties, missing a State Banquet on December 3.

The King had to step back from public duty in February. He returned to public duty in April, embarking on his own tour of Australia in October.
