Son of Norway’s Crown Princess to be released from prison after rape allegations

Marius Borg Hoiby, the eldest son of Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit, is to be released from custody after .

At the same time, Oslo police began an investigation into a new alleged sexual offence for which he has not been charged, Norwegian broadcaster NRK reported. Officers have not yet released details of the new allegations.

Borg Hoiby, 27, was arrested on Monday night on suspicion of rape, marking the third time he has been arrested since August.

Police said he was arrested on a preliminary charge of having had “sexual intercourse with someone who is unconscious or for other reasons unable to resist the act”.

A preliminary charge comes before a formal charge and allows authorities to detain suspects during an investigation.

At the time, police did not say when the alleged rape occurred, but only that “the victim must have been unable to resist the act.”

Last Wednesday while investigations were ongoing. The judge also forbade Borg Hoiby from receiving any visits or letters during the same period.

His lawyer, Oeyvind Bratlien, told the press his client is innocent after the hearing was held behind closed doors.

Police said this morning that they would not seek further detention of Marius because there was no indication that important evidence would be removed, NRK reported.

“This was not surprising. He shouldn’t have been imprisoned at all,” Bratlien said. Borg Hoiby is expected to be released later on Wednesday.

More preliminary charges have since been filed against Borg Hoiby, including violating several restraining orders and driving without a valid driver’s license. In all, the cases involve four women and one man.

Borg Hoiby was first arrested on August 4, 2024, after a late-night incident at a woman’s apartment in Oslo. The royal was accused of “physically and psychologically” assaulting the resident and causing damage to her home. Police said the pair had been in a relationship.

In September, the royal was arrested a second time for violating a restraining order. He is alleged to have contacted the victim from a hidden phone number, despite a restraining order being in place.

Marius is the , and was born before Mette-Marit married Crown Prince Haakon – the heir apparent to the Norwegian throne – in 2001.

He and his step-siblings – Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 20 and Prince Sverre Magnus, 18 – were raised together by Mette-Marit and Haakon.

Marius has no official public role or royal title.
