*Warning – This article contains spoilers for the Waitrose Christmas Advert*
has finally unveiled the second instalment of its mystery advert. The culprit involved in Sweet Suspicion, A Waitrose Mystery, has finally been revealed after weeks of speculation.
The first advert, which went live in early November, saw the No.1 Red Velvet Bauble Dessert stolen by an undisclosed thief. The identity of the culprit has kept people guessing for weeks, securing Waitrose its biggest ever Christmas campaign.
Polls over on Waitrose’s website showed the majority of customers predicted Fig the Cat to be the dessert thief, followed by Gamma, then May and the least suspicious being Steve.
The retailer has now shared the second ad, starring as the detective again. The new video follows him as he works to establish a motive, with moments from Christmas Day being shown as the guilty party’s movements are pieced together.
Many had suspected Fig the Cat to be the suspect
The detective is then seen working out how somebody could pull off such a crime, before dramatically revealing that is was Steve who had hidden the dessert in the gingerbread house.
Steve is then caught red-handed in the garden shed enjoying the first bite of the dessert. Once the mystery is solved, the clip finishes with the entire family tucking into the dessert together in a heartwarming moment.
Dustin Demri-Burns, who plays culprit Steve, said: “I can fully empathise with Steve and his pud-thieving ways. The pressure of making Christmas wonderful can get to us all – sometimes we just want to eat our pudding in the shed and that’s ok.”
Meanwhile, Joe Wilkinson, who plays the part of Uncle Phil, added: “I’ve been getting accused left right and centre so I’m glad the public now knows that it WASN’T ME.” (sic)
Steve was revealed to be the thief
The second advert is being released on TV this evening (26 November) during the ad break for the Great British Bake Off on Channel 4 at 8.15pm, followed by the I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! break on ITV at 9.15pm.
As Waitrose’s incredible Christmas campaign wraps up, Nathan Ansell, Customer Director at Waitrose, commented: “The last few weeks have been filled with suspicion, guessing and alibis. Customers and Partners alike have been getting into the ‘whodunnit’ spirit, from wearing the ad t-shirts in store with their predictions of who the culprit is, we’ve also seen huge engagement on social media polls and I’ve even had customers getting in touch with their own detailed theories and pictures.
“I can’t wait for everyone to find out who did it! So here’s to celebrating with some amazing GOOD food and seeing the surprise or smug looks on everyone’s faces.”
Fans can hear Actor Matthew Mcfadyen talking abou thte Waitrose Christmas ad as he joins Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett on the beloved and award-winning foodie podcast Dish from Waitrose, which is out on Wednesday, November 27.
