Much of the UK will remain dry on November 29, but northern Scotland will see rain and freezing rain
Brits across the country are still reeling from , with widespread flooding continuing to blight commuters today.
Rail and road users have been disrupted this morning with 352 flood warnings and flood alerts across England, and a severe flood warning in Northamptonshire.
However, despite expectation that the travel challenges posed by Storm Bert will soon abate, some areas of the UK are in for more inclement conditions later this week.
On November 29, an area of northern Scotland is forecast to experience a rare weather event: “freezing rain”.
According to forecaster WX Charts, a small patch of the Highlands will see freezing rain at around 9pm on Friday night. Freezing rain, the says, “tends to start its life as snow, ice, sleet or hail, but passes through a layer of air that’s above 0C on the way down to the ground, melting into a liquid water droplet.”
The national forecaster goes on: “If these droplets then fall through a zone of sub-zero air just above the ground, they become supercooled. When these supercooled droplets strike surfaces that are close to or below freezing, they freeze on impact forming a glaze of ice.”
The itself has not forecast freezing rain in the Scottish Highlands or elsewhere, and tends not to specify the time and precise location of precipitation days in advance.
For the rest of the country, WX Charts is predicting generally clear conditions but low temperatures of November 29. London and the south-east will see the mercury hovering around three or four degrees, while Wales and northern areas of England will be a degree or two above feezing.
Scotland meanwhile will largely be hovering around 0C, but Northern Ireland is predicted to be much warmer, with temperatures in the high single figures.
