Phil Foden reacts to a missed chance.
The wave of optimism created at by was wiped away in a harrowing 90 minutes at the Etihad. After a bright start, the champions were rocked by two James Maddison goals before the break, with Pedro Porro sealing the win in the second half before Brennan Johnson completed the rout.
It’s now five straight defeats for Guardiola’s side, and a new low for the manager himself. And City are now up against it to retain their league crown, with handed the chance to go eight points clear at tomorrow.
Express Sport runs the rule over the City player ratings in their harrowing showing….
Ederson 5 – Hard to blame for him the goals goal, but his usual range of passing from the back was lacking. Did deny Dejan Kulusevski brilliantly late on.
Kyle Walker 4 – Regularly pulled out of position by Son, and summed it up on commentary when he said the right back was being “torn to shreds.” Done for pace by Timo Werner for the last goal.
John Stones 5 – Allowed Maddison to ghost in him behind him for the first goal and taken off at half time. Wasn’t clear if he was injured.
Manuel Akanji 5 – Gave Kulusevski too much space to cross for the first goal and struggled to pick up the runners.
Josko Gvardiol 3 – An awful night for the Croatian. His misplaced pass led to the second and caught in no man’s land for the third. Spent much of the time defending there in fact.
Erling Haaland misses an early chance.
Rico Lewis 4 – Like Walker, badly exposed on the right hand side when Spurs came forward, and barely imposed himself in attack
Ilkay Gundogan 4 – Looks a spent force. The first goal came from him failing to track Maddison’s run and the England man gave him the runaround all night.
Bernardo Silva 5 – Busy as always but minus the quality and end product we’ve come to expect – his display summed up by a wayward late volley.
Don’t miss… [PLAYER RATINGS]
Phil Foden 5 – Volleyed over from point blank range and tame with a second half shooting chance. A shadow of the player of last season.
Erling Haaland 3 – Wretched night in front of goal. Should have put City ahead twice before Spurs struck, hesitating when clean through early on and then denied from close range by Vicario. Fired a third chance over before the break and wasted three further openings after the break.
Savinho 7 – One of the few to emerge with credit. His brilliant turn and run led to one first-half chance to Haaland and his pin-point ball to Gvardiol was wasted by the defender late on. Can hold his head up.
Subs:
Nathan Ake (for Stones, HT) 5 The rot had set in by the time he came on. And it was hardly shored up after he did.
Jack Grealish (for Savinho, 74) 5 Given little time to turn the tide. And he didn’t turn it – giving the ball away to Werner which led to No.4.
Kevin de Bruyne (for Rico Lewis, 74) 7 One lovely slip pass to Haaland produced flashes in his cameo. How City need him to stay fit now.
