The King told Royal Variety Performance hosts Alan and Amanda that he and the Queen are planning on getting a new dog, following the death of Camilla’s beloved Jack Russell terrier, Beth.

Speaking afterwards, Alan said it was the first time he had met the King. “Is it?!” Amanda asked astonished. “I’ve met Camilla before”, he said before his double act quickly reminded him of royal protocol and said: “Say Her Majesty.”

The comedian pulled an apologetic face and said “Her Majesty”, before continuing: “It’s the first time I met him and he was so sweet and he apologised for [the Queen] not being here.”

Amanda added: and I said we definitely earned our £1 that we got paid. And he said yes, they got you popping up in every single thing. Then we mentioned Her Majesty and we wished her well and I gave condolences for the doggy.”

On Monday, Buckingham Palace announced that the Queen’s dog Beth had died. Camilla adopted the Jack Russell terrier from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in 2011. The Queen is patron of the animal charity and Amanda is an ambassador.

“I felt for her, I really felt for her when that happened,” Amanda said. Alan then quipped: “I don’t know how he felt about that because then he said, ‘Merry Christmas’.”

Amanda was forced to intervene again as she said: “No, he said ‘we’re going to get a new one, Merry Christmas’. and I said ‘yes, but get it from Battersea please’.” Alan joked: “Always working.”

The Britain’s Got Talent judge said she had just rescued a puppy from Battersea. Alan also rescued a dog in the same week, a deaf half lurcher half whippet.

“He did so well to be here,” Amanda added. “He was really funny, I’ve always said out of everyone he’s got the best sense of humour in the whole of the Royal Family.

“They’re very down to earth, that’s what it is for me. You don’t feel intimidated when you meet them at all.”

Alan wrapped up the chat and said: “We also got the goss that he was laughing at some of our bits – so we’re very happy. You get a laugh and that’s what you’re here for.”
