It’s official – eating cheese can make you feel happier and more relaxed.

A study has found the savoury favourite contains a whey-derived peptide called ß-Lactolin that lowers levels of self-perceived stress in adults.

It is found in all dairy products, but particularly in Camembert and other cheeses fermented by penicillium, such as Brie and Cambazola.

As a result it can help consumers relax, while also reducing stress and anxiety.

The study revealed the peptide found in soft cheeses inhibits an enzyme that breaks down happy hormones like dopamine.

The research was carried out by scientists from four universities in Japan. They analysed 60 people aged between 45 and 64, with some receiving 1.6mg of ß-Lactolin and others a placebo.

They were then asked questions about their mood and their cortisol levels were measured, which is a marker of stress.

Significant improvements were seen in those who took the peptide, particularly in those aged 45 to 54.

The researchers wrote: “These results indicate the daily intake of ß-lactolin improves several aspects of mood state, such as state anxiety and perceived stress.”
