The latest forecast comes just as B.C. Hydro says it has restored power to 90 per cent of customers who lost electricity this week after a so-called bomb cyclone offshore sent hurricane-force winds into parts of the south coast.

Winds reached up to 100 km/h in some places, with the most powerful speeds recorded on the remote Sartine Island off Northern Vancouver Island. Gusts in that region reached 113 km/h.

As of noon Thursday, there remained 21,749 customers on Vancouver Island and 6,278 in the Lower Mainland and the Sunshine Coast without power. A total of 290,000 customers had already regained power after B.C. Hydro crews worked “around the clock” over the last two days.

According to Environment Canada, strong winds will likely continue today along the north and central coast, while a new special weather statement for Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast warned of another storm due Friday.
