But fans noticed that the Queen had made a change to the last time she wore it – as she wasn’t wearing a portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth.

When she debuted the family order for Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan’s state visit in the summer, she wore both Charles and the late Queen’s badge. However last night she just wore one honouring the King.

But she represented the late Queen in her own way by wearing the aquamarine tiara for the first time – which is now thought to be in after sporting the look a number of times.

This was favoured by her after being made by Garrard in 1957 to match a set of earrings and necklace gifted to the Queen by the people of Brazil for her coronation in 1953.

Camilla wore a blue velvet floor-length ball gown, by Fiona Clare to the event which was paired with her own matching diamond earrings and necklace.

The new order is based on a photograph of the monarch wearing the uniform of Admiral of the Fleet and his array of decorations taken by Hugo Bernard back in 2023. The delicate badge is surrounded by diamonds weighing 10.41 carats and suspended from a pale blue silk bow.

The diamonds used to create the bespoke design are from the existing collection of loose stones in Royal possession.

His Majesty personally selected the colour of the ribbon, which is based on the Family Order of his great-grandfather, King George V, and marks a change from the yellow that decorated the late Queen’s.

Meanwhile, the artist painted it on an oil synthetic polymin – a new addition as in the past it had been traditionally created on ivory.
