YVR says the incident happened at 1:45 a.m. when the aircraft overran the eastern boundary of YVR’s north runway.
Travelers are being told to expect delays at Vancouver International Airport on Tuesday and Wednesday, after an Amazon cargo plane slipped off the runway early Tuesday.
The TSB says the plane was a Boeing 767 operated by Cargojet Airways.
In a statement, a YVR spokesperson said the incident happened at 1:45 a.m. when the aircraft overran the eastern boundary of the airport’s north runway. The Cargojet flight was operating a Prime Air aircraft.
“Safety and security are our top priorities and YVR Fire and Rescue attended,” the statement read. “There were no injuries reported and the Cargojet crew of three were safely deplaned.”
In its statement, YVR confirmed the runway would be closed for about 48 hours to allow for an investigation and to remove the plane.
“This closure will have an impact on YVR operations and flight schedules, but aircraft continue to arrive and depart on our South Runway,” the statement read.
“We encourage passengers to check with their airlines for current flight schedules and status before heading to YVR.”
The Transportation Safety Board’s website says runway overruns can damage planes and, in the worst cases, lead to injuries or deaths.
The board says the consequences can be particularly serious when there isn’t an adequate area around the runway or a suitable system to stop planes.
