The late Queen’s diaries have been kept throughout her 70-year reign and are said to have been a log of daily events – rather than deep reflection.

She will most likely have been aware that her eldest son would appoint a writer to “write her official life” – including the start of her reign in her 20s, until her death aged 96.

A former member of the royal household told back in 2019 that the Queen wrote in her diary with a fountain pen using black ink. She is said to have added to her diary “no matter how late the hour or how weary she may be”. They added: “It is an unmissable duty, and she writes at a desk, never in bed.”
