One year on from the Hamas attack on Israel which killed around 1,200 people, 97 of the roughly 250 taken hostage during the attack in 2023 remain in Hamas custody.

According to the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, which represents the families of those who were taken, 97 of the roughly 250 people taken hostage during the , remain in custody of terrorists.

While some have been killed, rescued by forces, or returned home in an exchange, many remain unaccounted for.

It is not yet known how many have died in captivity. In some cases, deaths have been reported but their bodies have not been returned home.

A number of people have been confirmed to have died, including on September 1, when the IDF announced that its forces had recovered the bodies of six hostages: Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi and Master Sgt Ori Danino. Their bodies were , the IDF said.

One June 3, the IDF announced it had informed the families of four men: Amiram Cooper, Chaim Peri, Yoram Metzger and Nadav Popplewell, that they were no longer alive and their bodies were being held by Hamas.

On December 16, the Israeli military expressed “deep remorse” after soldiers who had escaped from their captors. They were named as Yotam Haim, 28, Samer Talalka, 22, and Alon Shamriz, 26.

Maxim Kharkin, 35, a Russian speaker, had called his mother at 7am on the morning of the attack, she told Russian media. He was taken from the Nova Festival.

Tsachi Idan, 49, was taken from Nahal Oz after being ambushed with his wife, Gali, and children in their safe room and then led away. Their ordeal was live-streamed by Hamas.

Their eldest child, Maayan, who had just turned 18, was shot dead, Gali told the BBC.

A picture of Alexandre Sahsa Trupanov

Alexandre Sahsa Trupanov, 27, was taken hostage with his mother Lena Trupanov, 50, his partner Sapir Cohen, 29, and his grandmother Irina Tati, 73. All were abducted from Kibbutz Nir Oz as they spent the Sabbath together, according to a statement by Canada’s Raoul Wallenburg Center for Human Rights.

Irina and Lena were released on Wednesday 29 November and Sapir was freed the next day.

A picture of Doron Steinbrecher

Doron Steinbrecher, 30, a veterinary nurse, was in her apartment in Kibbutz Kfar Aza when Hamas attacked, the Times of Israel reported. At 10.30am on the day of the attack, she sent a voice message to her friends: “They’ve arrived, they have me.”
