A pretty UK market town with a beautiful high street is a “perfect” autumn day out.

Arundel is a small town in West Sussex. It is located in the South Downs, a range of chalk hills that goes through Hampshire, East and West Sussex.

The town has been named the most relaxing place in all of Europe by TravelSupermarket, due to its beautiful location and its easy-going lifestyle.

Running along the River Arun, it is packed with independent shops, art galleries, pubs, restaurants and coffee shops. It’s also a great spot for cycling and canoeing.

The castle was built in 1067 and is now the seat of the Duke of Norfolk. The cathedral was opened in 1873, and sat atop a hill with French Gothic architecture and a wheel window.

There are some great walks starting from the town itself. One of the best is the walk along the River Arun to the Black Rabbit pub, which sits on the riverbank.

If you’re feeling up for a challenge, you could try a longer walk, like the six-mile trek across the South Downs to the lovely village of Amberley.

DON’T MISS [REPORT]

In the nearby area is the Roman city of Chichester and the coast, with Climping Beach just a short drive away.

Arundel station is a short 15-minute walk or quick taxi ride from the town centre, and it’s about 90 minutes from London Victoria. If you’re driving, it takes roughly the same amount of time from parts of South London, via the M23, A23 and A27.

There are lots of places to stay both in the town and in the surrounding area, with accommodation including hotels, hostels, bed and breakfasts and more available.
