Tokyo in Japan is the second-most populated capital in the world. The city has a population of over 37 million people in comparison to the country of Australia where the population is just over 26 million.

Despite Australia being the sixth-largest country in the world, , India and China also has a population higher than Australia.

The city, which was once known as Edo and was a small village, became the first city in Asia to have a population higher than one million people by the 1720s. Its population declined by the end of World War II.

However, in 1956, the city’s population recovered and was over 8 million for the first time.

Today, is the centre of the country’s government, economy, and education. It holds the headquarters of several of the world’s largest investment banks and insurance companies, including Mitsubishi UFJ and Sumitomo-Mitsui Banking Corporation.

Also, many of Japan’s universities are based in the city, meaning those who are pursuing a degree tend to move there. The University of Tokyo is one of the highest-ranked universities in the country.

The capital is the country’s largest domestic and international hub for rail and ground transportation. It has more than 900 train stations and up to 62 electric train lines, making it the world’s most widespread urban railway network.

It is also home to the world’s busiest pedestrian cross. Shibuya crossing sees around 3,000 people crossing at a time from multiple directions. It was first opened in 1932 and, over the years, has become a famous site used for Japanese and international films and TV programmes. It is also often compared to New York’s time square.

Not only does the capital have a higher population than Australia, but it also sees more tourists a year than the country. Tokyo saw over 19 million international tourists visit the city in 2023 where, as Australia saw around five million.

Tokyo is often labelled as a great place to live in due to the incredible public transport services, safe neighbourhoods, clean streets, and the countless job opportunities it offers.

Similar to Australia, which saw 412,530 international migrants move to the country. The country is also recognised as a great place to live due to its low crime rate and high standard of living.

The reason that Tokyo’s population is so much larger than Australia’s, despite both of them being acknowledged as great places to live, can be put down to the geographical sizing of them both.
