Now that the weather is getting colder many people are worried about rising bills, but may not realise many devices around the home could be adding to the cost.

Valli Vishnubhotla, an expert from has pointed out some of the top five appliances around the home to never leave on standby as they could be raising your energy unnecessarily.
What to never leave on standby in the home
Dryers and refrigerators
Dryers and refrigerators tend to use up the most energy in the home as older models are less energy-efficient than modern ones.
Both dryers and refrigerators regulate temperatures which is why they have such a high power demand.

Dryers are one of the devices tat use up the most energy in the home
Valli said: “Dryers and refrigerators are two of the most energy-intensive appliances in a home and replacing these with better efficient models can cut the electricity usage by half, thereby reducing your electricity bills.”
Most of us can replace our dryers or refrigerators once they have broken down, but it is worth checking the seal on the doors of both devices as worn-out seals allow air to escape, which increases energy consumption.
Replacing the seal around the doors of refrigerators and dryers can help make these devices more efficient which will cut down on future energy costs.
Televisions, computers and chargers
It may seem obvious but the most common devices to be left on standby in the home are our phone chargers, televisions, computers and gaming consoles.
Many people can fall asleep or get distracted while having these devices on, but taking the time to shut them down or put computers and televisions on sleep mode can make a significant impact on saving energy.
Televions, computers and gaming consoles use up energy as people forget to switch them off
Valli said: “Needless to say how important it is to unplug devices when not in use. Do not leave devices on standby but rather unplug them and save your electricity bill, and the planet.
“Even when not in use, devices like TVs, computers, and chargers consume standby power, known as ‘vampire energy.’
“Unplugging these devices when not in use can save up to £80 per year on your electricity bill.”
Taking the time to replace light bulbs or switching off lights in a empty room save a great deal of energy
Lights
Man, people leave the lights on the rooms they are not using, which leads to unnecessary energy consumption and costly bills.
Valli said: “A basic habit to develop and foster is to make sure that you always turn off the lights when leaving a room.
“Make a reminder to do so until you get into a habit of doing so subconsciously. You can save a good chunk of your monthly electricity costs by doing something as simple as this regularly.”
A simple way to cut down on light energy is to switch the wattage of bulbs they are using, as using a 100-watt bulb in a small room is unnecessary when a 40-walt bulb will do.
Taking the time to be more aware of what is using up energy in the home and being mindful of when to shit things off will help reduce electricity bills so you have one less thing to worry about this winter.
