The 75-year-old from Ilkley in Yorkshire published his first gardening book in 1976 before hosting his first show on Radio 2 in 1988.

He then made his first TV appearance on the show Nationwide as a horticulture expert which then led to him presenting the Chelsea Flower Show.

Over the years, has presented and featured on a plethora of shows including Pebble Mill, Breakfast Time and Ground Force.

One of his biggest roles was taking over as host of Gardeners’ World which was filmed in his own.

Alan has been married to his wife since 1975. The couple have two children.

In 2002, the couple moved into their grade II listed Georgian Hampshire farmhouse which is set on four acres of gardens.

The property is located near the market town of Alton in Hampshire which is located near the source of the River Wey.

The town has a rich history and was even recorded in the Domesday Survey of 1086 and has connections with Jane Austen.

Alan previously told The Times that the oldest part of his property dates all the way back to 1690.

He said: “The oldest bit dates from 1690 and the extension from 1777 — it’s scratched in the bricks.

“We asked a local historian to research it for us, so we know the name of every owner back to Domesday.”

However, the property isn’t Alan’s only property. He also has a coastal property near Cowes on the Isle of Wight.

He spends around a third of his life on the Isle of Wight and the rest of the year at his Hampshire home.

Despite Alan’s impressive home, properties in Alton had a reasonable average price of £382,307 over the last year, according to Rightmove.

The majority of sales in Alton during the last year were semi-detached properties, selling for an average price of £396,902.

Terraced properties sold for an average of £354,537, with flats fetching £201,898.

Overall, sold prices in Alton over the last year were similar to the previous year and four percent up on the 2020 peak of £367,055.
