President Marga Prohens revealed the plans while addressing parliament
A radical new plan to extend a train line from Palma to Lluchmajor in Majorca has been announced, and is set to end traffic hell for scores of drivers.
President Marga Prohens revealed the proposals while addressing parliament. It is estimated that 7.5 million per year could benefit from the changes, alleviating congestion on the roads.
She said: “This month, the project for the new train service from Palma to Llucmajor will go on display. It will also connect, among other points, Palma’s residential neighbourhoods with the Son Llàtzer University Hospital, the future Palma exhibition centre, Palma Airport and a park-and-ride car park at Son Oms.”
The will provide a mobility alternative to one of the busiest roads and after a decade of promises plans are finally hoped to get off the ground.
Prohens and her government are under pressure to resolve the traffic problems on the islands with many key roads suffering gridlock at peak times.

Palma is a popular tourist destination so having good transport links is crucial to the area
Earlier this year, discussions were had about the amount of tourists on the island – the city centre was suffering from overcapacity.
Many – a concerning detail as Palma prohibits the renting of apartments for tourist purposes.
But the illegal renting issue has not gone unnoticed by local residents. Menys Turisme, Més Vida platform, a group advocating for reduced tourism and better quality of life, organised a protest outside a building on C. Arquitecte Bennassar.
All the apartments in this building were being illegally let to tourists, displacing ten families who could no longer afford to live there.
With the issue not going away any time soon, it is hoped that the updated railway link will help to ease traffic after many years of talking about a possible solution.
