is known for its honest portrayal of the struggles of childbirth in the 1950s.

The sitcom follows the lives of the midwives and nuns at Nonnatus House in London’s East End which is based on the book written by Heidi Thomas.

The beloved show has drummed up a loyal fanbase over its 12-year reign, which is set to return for series 14 next year.

But what fans may be surprised to know is that many of the cast and crew believe the famous house to be “haunted” in real-life.

Speaking to , Megan Cusak (who plats Nancy Corrigan), Helen George (Trixie Aylward) and Rebecca Gethings (Sister Vernocia) shared their supernatural encounters after wrapping up series 13.

Sharing their suspicions about the famous Nonnatus House, Cusak told the publication: “So we genuinely do think Nonnatus is haunted. Spooky things happen.”

The actor admitted that she often asks someone to accompany her to the bathroom due to the building’s “spooky” nature in the winter months.

She added: “I’m not the only person who feels that way. Helen is pretty obsessed with it as well.”

Her co-star George went on to share some of her supernatural encounters, including “faces in the windows, a little girl that runs around giggling [and] a lady holding a dog” by Dr Turner’s (Stephen McGann) office.

However, McGann was quick to clarify that he doesn’t believe in the rumours of ghostly spirits at the set. “Do I adhere to the rumour that the corridor by Dr Turner’s surgery is haunted? No.”

Fans will have to stay tuned to see if they spot any supernatural figures in the new series set to air later this year.

One thing fans may be surprised to learn is that this isn’t McGann’s first time on a big TV show. The actor previously graced the screens of during the 1990s as the philandering Sean Reynolds.

Stephen first set foot in the Dales in 1999 where he portrayed the village bad boy for three years before he left the soap in 2002.

In addition to and Call the Midwife, Stephen has featured in a plethora of popular television shows and films including Brookside, Bergerac, Streetwise, Catherine the Great, Doctors, The Bill and Casualty among others.
