Anohni and the Johnsons: It’s Time To Feel What’s Really Happening
When: Oct. 5, 8 p.m.
Where: Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, UBC
Formed in 1998 as a vehicle for her distinct brand of art song pop tunesmithing, Anohni and the Johnsons releases its sixth studio album, My Back Was A Bridge For You To Cross, in 2023 to almost universal rave reviews. For this rare concert, the singer is backed by the crack nonet which even includes a touring dancer. How very Bez.
Dropkick Murphys, Pennywise and the Scratch
When: Oct. 13, 6 p.m.
Where: B.C. Harbour Convention Centre
Shine up your 48 hole Dr. Martens boots, wash the beer stains off the Utili-kilt (or don’t) and make sure you get in a good pre-mosh pit stretch. Because this triple-bill of bands is going to be one high-energy act after the next. Celtic punks Dropkick Murphys still fly the tartan flag of anarchic fun decades after forming, Pennywise is back clowning around and Irish heavy folkies the Scratch are just killer live.
Desert Daze Nights North: Minami Deutsch and Mong Tong
When: Oct. 17, 7:30 p.m.
Where: The Pearl,
Since forming in Tokyo in 2014, this quartet of self-described “repetition freaks” has plied its distinctive brand of mid-70s krautrock blended with elements of minimal techno into a powerfully driving sonic celebration. The band’s live shows are celebrated for their intensity and relentless attack. To make this even more enticing for avant-indie fans, Taiwan’s psychedelic crew Mong Tong opens.
Jamie xx — In Waves Tour
When: Jan. 20, 8 p.m.
Where: PNE Forum
With all three members of the xx releasing fantastic solo projects, it seems unlikely that the trio is to tour anytime soon again. Not that they don’t seem to get along. All of them appear on each other’s releases. The latest of which is the new solo outing by producer extraordinaire Jamie xx, whose new record, In Waves, is an absolute banger blend of dance grooves, ambient textures and earworm pop hooks.
