It’s the time of year when drying clothes turns into a constant battle with sudden rain, damp garments and condensation soaked windows as households across the UK try to dry the washing outside or inside – and come up against problems either way.

Drying outside, and at this time of year you can get caught out by the sudden onset of rain showers at seemingly any given moment.

But dry inside, and you run the risk of mouldy walls, as evaporated water from your has to go *somewhere* – and usually ends up sticking on walls, around winder frames and on ceilings, turning into black mould spores if your room isn’t aired out – which can be hard to do when it’s freezing outside.

But there is a way you can dry clothes inside regularly and save your house from turning into a , spore infested health hazard through the winter.

There are several house plants which are extremely effective at sucking up excess moisture.

Peace lilies, because of their origins in humid climates like rainforests, strip excess dampness from the air around them, perfect for rooms where you’re hanging drying clothes in winter.

Ferns, like a boston fern, can also act like an air sponge, mopping moisture from the space around them, including from evaporating laundry.

Saga UK says: “A Boston fern is an ideal plant to place in a bathroom, as it will thrive in areas of high humidity prone to developing mould and mildew.”

Snake plants

Finally, snake plants are extremely hardy and rarely need watering, but they will also feed on moisture around them, making them a perfect natural mould guard.

As Saga adds: “Sometimes known as mother-in-law’s tongue or viper’s bowstring hemp, this striking architectural plant is super- easy to look after, making it a perfect low-maintenance plant to help reduce mould.”
