Joe Swift has revealed that the late made jokes about during one of her last royal engagements.

Appearing on one of the latest episode’s of the podcast hosted by Monty Don, the gardening expert revealed his exchanges with the late monarch as she visited the

He said: “The Queen herself turned up to the show, which was quite amazing, and it was one of her last public engagements.

“As we were coming down main avenue, I’d been standing there for a couple of hours waiting around and the Queen came over.”

As she approached he said he was ‘very relaxed’ about meeting her Royal Highness after previously crossing paths with her in 2012. Before long, she started ‘cracking jokes about Alan Titchmarsh’ having remembered meeting Joe previously.

The late monarch also showed an interest in his particular role in the flower show. Joe who had been tasked with looking after the pollinators garden at the show told the Queen: “Oh, this is the garden for bees, and pollinators, because they’re in real decline and gardeners have to do everything that they can for them.”

To which she apparently replied: “Oh, you seem to know a lot about this sort of thing.”

He said that he wasn’t star struck in the slightest when meeting the monarch, saying: “I think everybody stands infront of the Queen and just becomes tongue-tied or really nervous or just becomes overwhelmed with the situation. And, I just thought, well, let’s have a bit of fun with this and she loved it.”

He added: “I started cracking my terrible bee jokes, and my bad bee jokes started to come out, and she seemed to like them, so I kept going for a little bit. She was on really good form then.”
